Short Bio – Education

Mentored by Gregory Hines, Andrew Nemr is considered one of the most diverse tap dance artists today. An international performer, choreographer, educator and speaker, Andrew’s work explores tap dance as a vehicle for storytelling and community building. He has played with Grammy Award winning musicians across multiple genres, founded and directed the tap dance company Cats Paying Dues, and co-founded the Tap Legacy™ Foundation, Inc. (along with Hines).

Andrew has been faculty at both Broadway Dance Center (NYC) and Steps on Broadway (NYC), adjunct lecturer at Queens College, and currently leads the tap dance program at the McBurney YMCA (NYC). Andrew has toured internationally as an educator including stops in Hong Kong, Taipei, Tokyo, London, Berlin, Barcelona, Stockholm, Costa Rica, Lebanon, and throughout the United States, at dance schools, festivals, conventions, and even a TED Conference!

Andrew’s teaching method, codified in Tap Dance Freedom training handbooks and lessons, has been heavily influenced by his work with Henry LeTang, Jimmy Slyde, Savion Glover, Ted Levy, Gregory Hines, and his study of the work of Steve Condos. Other influences have come from time spent with Harold Cromer, Dr. Bunny Briggs, Dr. James “Buster” Brown, LeRoy Myers, Ernest “Brownie” Brown, Henry “Phace” Roberts, Mable Lee, Tina Pratt, and Dianne Walker.
